Velebit organization Kuterevo was established in 1995 with the goal of preserving inner Croatia wildlife. In year 2002, in association with the Croatian center Knowledge for the environment and the Veterinary college in Zagreb, a unique project was put in place – Sanctuary for young bears, whose mission was to provide safety for orphan bears and protection for bear habitats. One of the key points of this program was education of visitors and their bonding with the wildlife and the bear charisma.

In 2005 a volunteers station was established with a goal of providing support to the project and the development of the local community. In the last couple of years the Sanctuary for young bears Kuterevo is a host to over 15 volunteer groups, more than 50 individual volunteers and over 20 thousand visitors a year.

Sanctuary says: “We know to little about a bear and it seems that the bear doesn’t know much about us either. It knows only the bad sides, the parts where we endanger it, where it has to fear us because we hold a gun. This sanctuary is one of the attempts to show the bear that humans can do it differently. We can learn from bears. We can come to new revelations with the bears and experiences how people can help the bears.”
