The city of Senj is the largest city near Apartments Miki with a 3000 year old history. Only 25km away from the apartments, the city hold numerous restaurants, supermarkets, pastry shops, a fresh vegetable and fruit market, disco club, tourist office, museum, landmarks, ATM machines, medical center, etc.
Certainly one of the most attractive Summer entertainment events on the Adriatic. Six days and nights of masquerades in the true sense of the word, they “rule” the city, justifying to the maximum each and every attribute of its name!! Since 1967, at the beginning of August the residents of Senj with their guests transform the city into the capital of the Summer masquerade on the eastern shore of the Adriatic.
The most attractive day is Saturday when three thousand masqueraders in a great carnival procession on the streets of the city attract the attention of about 25,000 spectators. Along with groups from Senj, Rijeka and its environs, Zagreb, Djakovo, Garešnica, Gradiška, Jastrebarsko, Sisak, etc. groups from abroad are also traditionally represented, including those from Italy (Fano), Slovenia (Ilirska Bistrica), Austria (Pandorf), Slovakia (Senec), the Czech Republic (Frydek Mystek), Poland (Wielun), Hungary (Kiseg) and Sweden (Samba-Stockholm).
Let us tell you a few words about the history of our Nehaj fortress. Fortress Nehaj was erected in 1558 when the Turks and Venice were at the peak of their power. In those bitter times Senj with its inhabitants resisted numerous attacks of the enemy trying to seize control over the town. Ivan Lenković, the captain of the Senj uskoks ordered all churches and monasteries being outside the town walls to be destroyed and a new fortress on the Trbušnjak hill (62 m) to be built. The fortress erected on the hill top was difficult to access so that it was impossible to carry it. This 18 m high and 23 m wide fortress could be reached by staircases via wooden bridge through narrow double gate The powerful walls 3,30 m thick narrowing towards the top ended with crenel and five small corner towers. They comprised a hundred of loopholes and eleven embrasures. The Nehaj fortress is open for visitors from May till October and if arranged in advance at all times.
